The best thrift and vintage stores in Prescott, Cottonwood, and Flagstaff.

Three towns, three completely different kinds of secondhand. Prescott has a real antique district — a walkable stretch of North Cortez Street with thousands of square feet of dealers. Cottonwood has Old Town Main Street, a row of shops you can do in an afternoon. Flagstaff has almost no curated vintage and one of the best charity thrift circuits in Arizona.

We're saying that last part plainly because it would be easy to pad. It's also good news if you're shopping for value instead of labels. Eighteen stores below, with hours where they're published and honest gaps where they aren't.

Prescott — the Cortez Street antique district

This is the best-documented cluster in the state for hours, which makes it the easiest to plan. Most of it is within a three-block walk of Courthouse Plaza.

1. Merchandise Mart Antique Mall — 205 N. Cortez St., 928.776.1728. Over 15,000 square feet with roughly 90 dealers and consigners: antiques, antique furniture, cast-iron cookware, old west and war memorabilia, and scientific oddities — Talking Rock singles out an extinct Elephant Bird egg, which tells you the range. Hours: Mon–Sat 10 a.m.–5 p.m., Sun 11 a.m.–4 p.m. Start here and budget an hour longer than you think.

2. Prescott Marketplace & Emporium — 117 N. Cortez St., 928.445.1460. Neon signs, vintage furniture, rustic ranch and industrial styles. Open seven days, opens 10 a.m.; Sun–Thu close 5 p.m., Fri–Sat close 7 p.m. — Talking Rock. Those Friday and Saturday evening hours are the reason Prescott works as a weekend: shop after dinner.

3. Cortez Street Emporium — 115 N Cortez St, (928) 541-0077. An eclectic, ever-changing antique mall. Listed hours are Friday 10 a.m.–7 p.m.; other days aren't published in the listing we read — Antique Stores Nearby. The Antique Register describes it as open seven days a week with late hours. Two sources, two pictures — call for the day you're going.

4. Granite Creek Antiques — 218 N. Granite St., 928.445.8559. Unique and elaborate furniture, lighting, timepieces, and an antique doll display. Hours: Tue–Sat 11 a.m.–5 p.m., Sun 11 a.m.–4 p.m., Mondays by chance or appointment — Talking Rock. "By chance" is the most honest hours listing in this entire post.

5. Pastime Pleasures Antiques — 103 E. Gurley, 928.458.5280. Classic baseball gloves and bats, sports memorabilia, wood furnishings, wall art, maps, vintage tools. Call ahead — the shop is sometimes closed due to the owner's health, per Talking Rock. That's worth printing rather than hiding. Call, and be gracious about the answer.

6. Tina's Montana Rose Mercantile — 100 N. Summit Ave., 928.533.3651. Eclectic furniture, fine antique print artwork, birdhouses, antiques and collectibles across a nine-room storehouse. Hours: Mon–Sat 10 a.m.–5 p.m., closed Sunday — Talking Rock.

7. The Second Hand Man — 535 S. Montezuma St., 928.445.6007. Eclectic furniture, home design, unique decorative items. Hours: Mon–Sat 9 a.m.–5 p.m. — Talking Rock. The 9 a.m. open makes it the first stop of the day.

Ninety dealers in one 15,000-square-foot building, and it's open Sundays. Prescott isn't a side trip for antiques. It's the destination.

Cottonwood — Old Town Main Street

Shorter, denser, and walkable end to end. Almost none of these publish hours, so treat it as a browse-what's-open afternoon rather than a schedule.

8. A Checkered Past — 907 North Main Street, (928) 634-8886. A multi-dealer antique mall — Verde Valley Antique Trail. Hours not published.

9. J&J Antiques / Larry's Antiques & Things — 796 N Main St., 928 202-4495 — Old Town Cottonwood. Visitors describe Larry's as the biggest and most unique antique store in town, running deep back from Main Street. It looks small from the sidewalk. It isn't.

10. Papillon II — 1004 N. Main St., (928) 649-1649. Antiques, vintage clothing, jewelry, and collectibles from around the world — Old Town Cottonwood and Cottonwood Hotel. This is the closest thing to curated vintage clothing in the Verde Valley on this list.

11. Cat's Meow — 926 N. Main Street. Antiques, home furnishings, collectibles, and unique gifts — Cottonwood Hotel. Neither hours nor a phone number are published anywhere we could verify, so this one is walk-by-and-see.

12. Paws Boutique Thrift Store — 791 N Main St, Old Town, (928) 634-4298 — Cottonwood Hotel. Obviously our kind of stop given the name. Honest note: we haven't confirmed which organization the proceeds benefit, so ask when you're inside rather than taking our word for it. Hours not published.

All four of these are within a few hundred feet of the verified Cottonwood stays we mapped, which is the argument for basecamping Old Town instead of Sedona.

Flagstaff — where the charity thrift is the good stuff

Here's the honest assessment: we could not verify a single dedicated curated-vintage shop in Flagstaff with a confirmable address and hours this round. What Flagstaff has instead is a genuinely excellent nonprofit thrift circuit with published hours, low prices, and proceeds that go somewhere. That's a better afternoon than a padded list of maybes.

13. Cedar Closet Thrift Shop — 2919 North West Street. The best-value stop in this post, and the hardest to catch. Furniture and décor, plus specialty sections for Holidays, Seasons, Western, and Back-to-School/NAU apparel; clothing including designer labels and handbags; linens, housewares, artwork, craft materials, small appliances, kids' toys. Year-round sales often offer clothing for fifty cents a garment, and designer items sell for a fraction of eBay resale — Flagstaff CVB.

The catch: hours are Thursday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. That's nine hours a week. Plan your whole Flagstaff weekend around it or you'll miss it.

14. Hodgepodge Thrift Store — 52 N. Switzer Canyon, run by Northland Hospice and Palliative Care. Hours: Tuesday–Saturday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. — Flagstaff CVB. The most generous hours in town.

15. Thrift for Goodness Sake — 2 South Beaver. Proceeds benefit the Sunshine Rescue Mission and Hope Cottage. Hours: Tuesday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. — Flagstaff CVB. Downtown, so it pairs with a walk.

16. Sharon's Attic — 1926 N. Fourth Street. Clothing and essentials; proceeds fund Sharon's Manor, transitional housing for survivors of domestic violence and their children. Hours: Tuesday–Saturday 9 a.m.–5:30 p.m., closing at 3 p.m. Wednesdays — Flagstaff CVB.

17. Habitat ReStore Flagstaff — 2016 N. 4th Street. Used furniture and appliances, run by Habitat for Humanity. Hours: Tuesday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. — Flagstaff CVB. It's a block from Sharon's Attic. Do them together.

18. Savers Flagstaff — 5060 U.S. 89, (928) 526-1066. Large-format thrift, Monday hours 9 a.m.–9 p.m. And the detail that matters for a pet-travel blog: the store page states Service Pets Allowed and parking available — Savers. Read that carefully. Service pets, which is not the same as pets.

Can you bring your dog into these shops?

Assume no. Only one store in this post publishes anything about animals, and what it publishes is a service-animal policy. Independent shops in Prescott are often friendly about it in practice — downtown Prescott shops commonly keep a water dish by the front door, per Prescott LIVING — but "often" is not a policy, and antique stores are full of breakable things at tail height.

What works:

• Walk Courthouse Plaza first. It's a block from Cortez Street and it's the town's informal dog gathering point. Walk, water, then shop in shifts.
• Two people, one inside. The whole Cortez district is close enough to trade off every twenty minutes.
• Ask at the door. A small shop will tell you honestly in five seconds.
• Never leave a dog in the car. Even at 5,300 feet. Even in October. Run the pavement test and apply the same skepticism to a parked car.

The one-weekend version

Friday afternoon, drive up to Prescott and hit The Second Hand Man and Prescott Marketplace before its 7 p.m. Friday close. Saturday morning, Merchandise Mart at ten, Granite Creek at eleven, lunch on the Plaza with the dog, Cortez Street Emporium in the afternoon. Sunday, drive the hour to Cottonwood and walk Old Town Main Street end to end.

If Flagstaff's in the plan, build around Cedar Closet's Thursday-to-Saturday window and stack Hodgepodge, Habitat ReStore, and Sharon's Attic on the same morning.
